Participants in the Delta Junction fiber series can learn to make custom-fit slippers, like these created by Juliet Bartolo.

A series of in-person workshops in Delta Junction will show participants how to take raw wool and clean, dye and create finished felted products they can wear home or sell.

Juliet Bartolo of Julz Naturals will lead the workshops, which are co-hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Center and Partners for Progress in Delta. All materials will be provided.

On Thursday, May 8, from 6-8 p.m., participants will learn to clean and dye raw wool. This class is free and will be held in the home economics classroom at Delta High School, 1655 N. Clearwater Ave., Delta Junction.

On Friday, May 9, from 6-9 p.m., participants will take the wool cleaned the night before and pick and card it into batts to use in spinning or felting. They will learn to spin with a drop spindle, which, with enough practice, can turn the wool into yarn. This class is free and will be held at the Delta Career Advancement Center, 1696 N. Clearwater Ave., Delta Junction.

Two classes are scheduled for Saturday, May 10, at the Delta Career Advancement Center. In the first, from 9 a.m. to noon, participants will learn the art of needle felting by creating a lifelike chickadee perched on a pine cone or birch ring. The cost is $25.

In the second class, from 1-5 p.m., participants will learn basic wet felting techniques and how to felt over a resist to make their own custom-fit slippers. The cost is $40.

Students 16 and under are welcome, but they must be accompanied by an adult who is also registered for the class. Space is limited. Register for one or all of the classes. Those who sign up for all four classes pay only $50. Register by calling 907-895-4605 or emailing info@deltacareeradvancementcenter.com.
